Transportation » Access to Healthcare Delivery Sites
Why It's Important
Lack of transportation is a primary barrier for consumers trying to access needed
services. AAAs and community-based organizations help many older people obtain transportation.
Through Title III of the Older Americans Act, funding is available to provide transportation
that helps consumers access needed services.

How Virginia Is Doing
In 2007, Senator Jim Webb announced passage of key provisions of the Rural Veterans
Healthcare Improvement Act of 2007 by the Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee. The
impetus of this is a 2004 by the Department of Veterans Affairs study, which found
that "veterans living in rural areas are in poorer health than veterans in urban
areas." Key provisions include:
- Innovative programs to improve health care access for rural veterans
- Creation of the VetsRide Grant Program
- Better travel reimbursement rates
- Required reports on the VA's progress toward improving care for rural veterans
